Keynote Speakers:
Simon Critchley (New School for Social Research, What We Think About When We Think About Soccer) Brenda Elsey (Citizens and Sportsmen: Fútbol and Politics in Twentieth Century Chile, Futbolera: Women, Gender, and Sexuality in Latin American Sport, Burn It All Down)
Paul Rouse (University College Dublin, The GAA: A People’s History, Sport and Ireland: A History, The Hurlers)

This interdisciplinary conference, scheduled to take place during the 2019 Women’s World Cup and hosted by GradCAM and the Dublin School of Creative Arts at Technological University Dublin, will focus on the art and aesthetics of all aspects of football in its various codes (Association, Rugby, Gaelic, American and Australian etc.) In particular, it seeks to explore the aesthetic discourses surrounding football in both its formal and informal practices. The conference aims to critically analyse the visual culture, performance and rhetoric of the game from perspectives including gender, language, museology and design.
The conference welcomes contributions from diverse fields not limited to aesthetics, literary and cultural studies, broadcasting, philosophy, fiction, linguistics, visual studies and the arts, design, and architecture to name but a few.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:
• The aesthetics of the game: style, tactics, etc.
• Translation between codes and (national) identity
• Gender and media politics of the game
• The role of the professional and cult of the amateur
• Languages and discourse of/in/around football
• Representations of football in contemporary arts: visual art, music, film, etc.
• Design in football: stadium architecture, jerseys, balls, gear, club emblems, etc.
• Icons and Myths of the game: players, managers, owners etc.
• The relationship of the game to the global artworld
• The role of the association and the international in the contemporary game.
• Artistic reflections on the subject matter

Conference will also include:
A screening of Football As Never Before Film with live score by Matthew Nolan and Panel Discussion
